Soapstone.
Soapstone is a natural, talc-rich stone with a matte finish and a smoothness you’ll find yourself running a hand across. Softer to the touch than other stone yet dense and durable, it’s completely non-porous — immune to acids, unbothered by heat, and never in need of sealant.
It’s also the rare countertop that improves with age: left alone it keeps its soft gray, or treat it with mineral oil and it deepens into a rich, dark patina. Small scratches simply sand or oil away. This is the stone of New England farmhouse kitchens for a reason.

Soapstone comes in blacks, grays, and greens, often with soft white veining that becomes more dramatic as the stone darkens with age.
